Hi, I’m Heather
I’m a Detroit-based wedding photographer and comedian. I love being Auntie Heydoo (#auntieheydoolife), my two dogs, Diet Coke (arguably too much), travel (bye bye money) and a good laugh (oh laughter, I love you most of all).
Fine-Art Storytelling for Detroit’s Intentional and Artful Couples
There are a lot of things I strive for when I create a photograph. I want it to be natural. I want it to be beautiful. I want it to be honest, but most importantly, I want it to be a reflection of the subjects. I want it to be you. When you look back on the photographs of your wedding day, I want them to make you smile, laugh, and sometimes cry. I want the photographs to remind you of your favorite moments and show you a few of them you missed (ring bearer picking his nose during the ceremony? You know I’m gonna try and get the shot). I still haven’t figured out exactly what words perfectly describe my style, but I’ve been going with Fine Art Documentation, which, simply put, means the story of your wedding day, beautifully captured.
I call Detroit home, and the city serves as my favorite backdrop for photos. That being said, I’ve travelled as far away as New Zealand to photograph a wedding, so suffice it to say that if you’re getting married anywhere on Planet Earth, and you love my work, I’m in (dream destinations: The Moon, Wakanda, and also Scotland).
My Accomplishments
I started my photography career after graduating from the University of Michigan and I’ve been lucky enough to have had the opportunity to travel the globe because of this work, not only photographing weddings, but also teaching other wedding photographers how they can become better photographers, speaking at international conferences in Rome, Mexico City, London, Vancouver, and Liverpool, as well as domestic ones in Santa Barbara CA, Marfa TX, and in my own backyard of Detroit.
I was named one of the Best Wedding Photographers in the country, from 2018-2021, by Brides Magazine. I’ve also been interviewed by the New York Times about wedding photography, which made me feel like a real big shot (the father of the bride, whose photograph was featured, hung the article in his orthodontic practice, which I thought was sweet).
I’ve been featured in a handful of other publications, but honestly, my greatest accomplishment is helping hundreds of couples document one of the most important days of their relationship. It’s such a joy to know that one day children, grandchildren and great grandchildren will look back at the photographs I created, in collaboration with all of these amazing couples, and be able to see the origins of their family. It’s such a privilege to be a part of building that photographic legacy. If I think about it for too long, I will cry.
If you’re reading this and thinking that I might be the photographer for your wedding day, feel free to reach out. I’d love to talk to you about your wedding day!
